You're reading: Hr 3.2 million to allocate to kill over 3,000 pigs due to African swine fever

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine will allocate Hr 3.2 million to compensate losses caused to residents of the 10-kilometer zone around the site of the African swine fever outbreak in Zaporizhia region, after killing of over 3,000 pigs, Head of the State Veterinary and Biosecurity Service of Ukraine Volodymyr Horzheyev said at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday, Aug. 22.

He said that the government made the decision at a cabinet meeting on August 22, 2012.

Horzheyev said that the compensation sum was allocated taking into account Hr 18.22 per kilogram of live weight.

He said that this pork will be processed into cooked sausages, canned meat, which will be put to the state food reserve.

Horzheyev said that the 10-kilometer zone includes six settlements and three farms.

As reported, earlier the government allocated Hr 483,322 from the
reserve fund of the national budget to refund losses caused to residents
of Komyshuvatka, Zaporizhia region, due to the slaughtering of pigs
infected by African swine fever.

The African swine fever outbreak registered on July 31, 2012 in
Zaporizhia region is the first reported case of this disease in Ukraine.

African swine fever infects domestic pigs, warthogs and wild pigs. There is no vaccine or treatment.
