You're reading: Ilyumzhinov creates Chess Party in Ukraine

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), has announced the creation of the Chess Party in Ukraine.

“The purpose of my visit to Ukraine is to open a chess academy in the village of Klesiv, Rivne region, and to announce the creation of the Chess Party,” Ilyumzhinov told a press conference hosted by Interfax-Ukraine.

“There are democratic parties and Communist Parties, and now there will be a Chess party. Why in Ukraine? Because the proposal came from the village of Klesiv, which will go down in the world history of chess and political thought,” Ilyumzhinov said.

“This party will be international. I would call it the World Chess Party. FIDE comprises 177 countries. We are hoping to increase the number of countries to 200 in the near future,” he said.

Ilyumzhinov believes conflicts and problems in the world are caused by the lack of thinking people. “I have visited many countries, I have played chess with Gaddafi, I have been in other problem zones, I have met with Bashar Assad in Syria […] All conflicts occurring in the world, the 2008-2009 financial crisis, and its second wave, which will soon hit all other countries, are not caused by a lack of oil and gas, but by a lack of clever, normal, thinking people. For example, Japan doesn’t have these resources, 95% of the territory of Korea is unsuitable for living, it’s only rocks and mountains, but they have given the world Samsung, Hyundai, cars, computers and telephones,” he said.
