The use of modern radars and breathalyzers will significantly increase the responsibility of drivers and prevent traffic police officers from taking bribes, Deputy Head of the Department of the State Automobile Inspectorate of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry Volodymyr Reznikov has said.

“As soon as we complete documents that will help us use modern technical means capable of conducting photo and video recording, such as TruCam, Vizir, Arena, Garpun, we will use them,” he said on the Social Status – Your Rights program on the Tonis television channel.

He said that the data that are recorded by modern devices is well protected evidence, and that this information cannot be eliminated, changed or falsified.

“We are planning to use these devices along with tamper-resistant boxes that will be installed on roads of national importance in big cities. They will record the speed of any cars, no matter who is behind the wheel – an official, a police officer or an ordinary citizen,” he said.

He said that road signs would be installed in front of each box, at a distance of at least one kilometer, telling the driver that he is on a section of road where speeds are monitored electronically. As for breathalyzers, their current models help store information for up to six months, and it can be checked at any time.

Reznikov expressed confidence that the new equipment would prevent police officers from taking bribes.

“If the radar records ten violations per shift, and while their number in the protocols is eight, then the question arises whether or a police officer takes bribes or does not have time to perform his duties. First, he could face a disciplinary penalty and next time he could lose his job,” he said.
