Ukraine is planning to hire a foreign company to check the quality of road construction in the country, Ukrainian Vice Premier and Infrastructure Minister Borys Kolesnikov has said.

As reported by an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent, Kolesnikov raised the issue of road construction quality control at various stages during a visit to the construction site of a new road junction in Miami.

“We are interested in two aspects. The first one the organization of all stages of construction, and the second is quality control,” Kolesnikov said at a briefing.

He noted that Ukraine badly needs companies that could control quality of road construction in the country.

“At first we will invite foreign companies for to check the quality of roads, and this will definitely bring us positive results,” he said, and added that Ukraine has no domestic companies of a relevant level that could do this work.

The minister added that such experts are to arrive in Ukraine in spring next year. He did not rule out that the experts could be invited from the United States.

“The government of Florida ordered the construction of 45 bridges [for the construction of a road junction in Miami] that have to be constructed within six years. They hired a private company that will carry out quality control,” he said.

Ukraine will use this experience, he said.

“Europe constructs roads at EUR 6 million per kilometer, while Ukraine pays Hr 6 million [per kilometer], and rain washes [the roads] away every year. It’s better to construct roads of good quality in the first place,” the vice premier said.
