President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski is going to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Viktor Yanukovych, to discuss with him matters of the European integration of Ukraine on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Chicago, the official web site of the Polish head of state reported on Friday.

"The president (Komorowski) believes there are many issues he needs to discuss with Viktor Yanukovych, including in the context of Ukraine’s progress in the preparation for the integration with the Western world," the report says.

The Polish president explained that he meant a rather complicated conclusion of the negotiations on an association agreement and a free trade area between Ukraine and the EU, which ended in the initialing of the document. "This conversation will probably deal with the risk of non-use of these achievements, given the situation in Ukraine’s domestic policies, including the issue of former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko," Komorowski said.

He said he saw this as a significant threat to Ukraine’s European aspirations, which also affected the Polish side, because Warsaw had always been a supporter of Ukraine’s rapprochement with the Western world. "Because we have always feared that the alternative would be Ukraine’s integration with the Eastern world… We can help and are helping Ukraine on its path to the Western world, but the key to success in this path is rather in the hands of Ukraine," the Polish president said.

According to Komorowski, Ukraine is facing a serious task of reforming the country’s legislation and judicial system, the report reads.

As reported, the NATO summit will be held in Chicago on May 20-21.
