Mayor of Kremenchuk (Poltava region) Oleh Babayev was shot early Saturday, July 26, a lawmaker from the UDAR faction Serhiy Kaplin has said on the 112 Ukraine TV channel.

He confirmed the information earlier spread in social networks that Babayev was shot near his house.

“He was blocked by a car. Three shots were made using smoothbore point-blank. He died,” Kaplin said.

Earlier the head of the press service of the Social-National Assembly Ihor Mosiychuk wrote on his Facebook page: “Details of murder of Kremenchuk Mayor Oleh Babayev. The mayor was shot near his house in own car by three shots. The model of the gun is under investigation.”

Babayev was born in Kursk in 1965. Since 1998, he had been board chairman of OJSC Kremenchukmiaso. Since April 2005, he had been president of FC Vorskla (Poltava). He was MP of the sixth convocation of the parliament since November 2007 from the Yulia Tymoshenko bloc. Since November 2010, he had been Mayor of Kremenchuk.
