You're reading: Kuchma goes to Cape Town, despite travel ban

Ukraine's second president (1994-2005), Leonid Kuchma, delivered a speech at the 62nd International Astronautical Congress in Cape Town (South Africa) on Oct. 3, despite the fact, that Prosecutor General's Office imposed travel restrictions on him.

Kuchma devoted his speech to Mikhail Yangel, the founder of the Pivdenne Design Bureau, as the anniversary of his 100th birthday is marked this year.

The International Astronautical Congress is taking place in Africa for the first time. The 62nd congress will last until October 7.

A criminal case was opened against Kuchma on March 21, 2011.

He is charged with abuse of power and official authority, which subsequently led to the murder of journalist Georgy Gongadze (Part 3, Article 166 of the 1960 Criminal Code).

Tapes secretly recorded by Kuchma’s former bodyguard Mykola Melnychenko in the president’s office have been declared to be material evidence in the case.

The Prosecutor General’s Office imposed travel restrictions on Kuchma.

At the same time, the Prosecutor General’s Office permitted the ex-president to travel abroad on the basis of petitions from his lawyers.
