You're reading: Kuzmin rejects Brok’s statement regarding prosecution of Tymoshenko

First Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Renat Kuzmin has rejected a recent accusation by Head of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs Elmar Brok of the use of selective justice in the criminal prosecution of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

“Elmar Brok is a public figure representing a group of politicians trying to release Tymoshenko, who was convicted by a Ukrainian court. Tymoshenko’s European political partner – Brok’s party – will support its representative,” Kuzmin said in an interview with an Interfax-Ukraine reporter, while commenting on Brok’s statement on Deutsche Welle accusing Kuzmin of using selective justice.

Kuzmin added that the European parliamentarian protects only Tymoshenko’s interests.

“Brok absolutely does not care about other prisoners who were convicted on similar articles. Brok cares only about the people, or, to be more precise, the woman within the area of interest of his employer,” Kuzmin said.

He also said he was surprised by the fact that Brok accused him and his colleagues of using selective justice, as “he forgot that neither me, nor investigators work as judges and render justice.”

“I am a prosecutor, who draws up materials for trial in the process of investigation. My task is to gather proof and submit it to court for evaluation. Only a court can make decisions on criminal cases, including the case on the murder of [Ukrainian parliamentarian Yevhen] Scherban, in which Tymoshenko is a suspect,” Kuzmin said.

He added that Brok would not manage to fulfill his obligation to release Tymoshenko.

“Elmar Brok is linking me with the issue not without reason. He realizes that he will never fulfill the obligation to justify and release Tymoshenko at any cost he had undertaken. I will not give Tymoshenko or her supporters a chance to evade the law,” Kuzmin said.

“That’s why I have become the target of Elmar Brok’s attacks. He is ready to do anything in order to prevent judicial examination of proofs of Tymoshenko’s guilt. I am sure that the court, and not politicians like Brok, has to assess the proofs collected by investigators,” he said.

As reported, earlier Elmar Brok in an interview with Deutsche Welle said that Kuzmin is the person responsible for the Tymoshenko case and other cases of selective justice in Ukraine.
