Kyiv authorities are planning to construct a center for the protection of animals in Kyiv for the temporary sheltering of stray animals.

The press service of Kyiv City State Administration informed that a draft instruction on the construction of the shelter would be submitted for consideration to deputies of Kyiv City Council soon.

A municipal shelter for stray animals is located in Borodianka (Kyiv region) and is owned by the municipal Company Shelter for Animals.

"Considering the fact that the existing shelter is located far away from Kyiv, it does not carry out a social function. When we construct a center for protection of animals in Kyiv for 1,500 animals, the community will be able to oversee its work. Any Kyiv resident will be able to come and take care of a dog. We have chosen a land plot and hope that deputies will support us in the issue of the allocation [of a land plot] for the construction of a shelter for animals," First Deputy Head of Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Mazurchak has said.

He added that the municipal authorities would use a humane way of controlling the number of stray animals, for example, through sterilization.

This year more than 4,000 dogs have been sterilized, which is two times more than last year.

The hotline phone number for the Center for Animal Identification is 332 1234.

It was introduced to more effectively address the problem of lost domestic pets and stray animals.
