The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry sent a note to the Russian side on May 25 to confirm its access to the Russian servicemen detained in the Luhansk Oblast, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Ambassador at Large Dmytro Kuleba has said.

“Yesterday, on May 25, the Embassy of the Russian Federation was officially informed by a note of the Foreign Ministry that the access had been granted. The note listed telephone numbers and names of the persons of the Ukrainian Security Service whom the consul should contact for resolving logistic aspects of this meeting,” Kuleba said at a press briefing in Kyiv on May 26.

“There has not been a single delay or a single attempt to make use of this situation and hinder the access of representatives of the Russian Embassy or another third authorized party to these citizens on our part,” the Ukrainian diplomat claimed.

He noted that representatives of international organizations had visited the detainees, Yevgeny Yerofeyev and Alexander Alexandrov.

The Russians were detained near the town of Schastia in the Luhansk Oblast on May 16. Kyiv claims they were officers of the Main Intelligence Department trying to seize control of a strategic bridge. The Russian Embassy claimed that the Ukrainian authorities had been hindering a meeting of its representatives with the detainees.

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office has launched an inquiry into possible terrorist activity of the detainees.
