A criminal case has been opened for abuse of office against the police that dispersed the Euromaidan protest rally on Kyiv's Independence Square in the early hours of Saturday, Kyiv police chief Valeriy Koriak said.

The police officers are accused of exceeding their powers, he said.

Information on the events that occurred on Independence Square in the early hours of Saturday has been included in the national pretrial investigation register, he told a briefing on Saturday.

“Information on facts of hooliganism, resisting arrest, and also violations of Article 365 [of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which deals with abuse of office) has already been included in the register,” he said.

Koriak reiterated that the police officers’ actions would be evaluated by both police and prosecutors.
