Kyiv – Ukraine has thanked President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski for opposing the boycott of the Euro 2012 European Football Championship matches in Ukraine.

"The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine positively evaluates the publication of an address of the president of Poland to the Ukrainian authorities. A real friend of our state, Bronislaw Komorowski, once again demonstrated his deep understanding of all peculiarities of the development processes in Ukraine and sincere support of its striving for European integration," reads a statement by the Foreign Ministry.

The ministry added that Kyiv shared the call of the Polish president for reform of the Ukrainian legislation to bring it into line with European standards.

"This is why, at the initiative of the president and the government of Ukraine, a new Criminal Procedure Code and a new version of the law on public unions were adopted in recent months, and amendments to the law on access to public information were drawn up to expand citizens’ ability to oversee the activities of the authorities," reads the statement.

The Foreign Ministry also promised that Ukraine would keep implementing relevant reforms.

"We appreciate Komorowski’s strong support of our position on the wrongness of the boycott of Euro 2012. Good quality, and free from artificial politicization finals of the European football championship in Ukraine and Poland are expected by hundreds of millions of fans on the whole continent," the Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry added that "no one has a right to turn this big dream into a hostage of transient political circumstances."

As reported, earlier Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski stated that calls of a number of European politicians for a boycott of Euro 2012 in Ukraine were "absolutely inappropriate" in the situation, and described them as being intended "to spoil a holiday."
