You're reading: Kyivenergo studying possibility of switching small boiler rooms to solid biofuel

Public JSC Kyivenergo, which exploits the capital's energy complex, is considering the possibility of switching its small boiler rooms to solid biofuel in the form of pellets under a program aimed at lowering the company's natural gas consumption, Kyivenergo Board Chairman Eduard Sokolovsky told reporters in Kyiv on Sept. 22.

According to him, the energy audits conducted by order of the company would select several small boiler rooms for switching to biofuel pellets.

Sokolovsky added that, according to preliminary calculations, the use of pellets by boiler rooms would cost 25-30% less than burning natural gas at its current price for heat and power generating companies.

He also said that the company jointly with Kyiv City State Administration is working on a possibility of using heat generated during incineration at the Energiya Plant, which could significantly cut the cost of heat, and save natural gas.

Sokolovsky also said heat station No. 5 (TETs-5) would be switched to a water-coal mixture.

He added that such decision could be taken only after the completion of the energy audits, which would indicate the economic reasonability and environmental aspects of such a technology.
