You're reading: Leanca: Moldova won’t recognize results of Crimean referendum

Acting President and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov met on Monday with PM of Moldova Iurie Leanca to discuss cooperation between two countries and the Crimea situation.

According to the press service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,
Leanca said that Moldova would never recognize the results of the “false
referendum in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea that was held following
the analogous Transnistria scenario.”

In addition, Leanca said that Moldova was prepared to reinforce the
political dialogue with Ukraine and to take all the necessary joint
actions to secure the region.

In turn Turchynov said, “What is happening now in the Crimea is
nothing else but unmotivated Russian aggression which has no explanation
– neither legal nor moral.”

“A false referendum would not have been held without Russian
aggression and presence of its troops,” he said, stressing that “the
false performance” which was staged on the territory of peninsula is
illegitimate, and this had been confirmed both by the Constitutional
Court of Ukraine and by the Venice Commission.

“There are no Crimean citizens on the territory of the Autonomous
Republic of Crimea, there are citizens of Ukraine, representatives of
different nationalities, the interests of which we can ensure,” said
Turchynov.

“Despite anything, we keep moving in the direction to the EU,” noted
Chairman of the Parliament. He said he hoped that jointly with the
assistance of its strategic partners Ukraine would manage to settle all
of Crimea’s issues.
