You're reading: Lethbridge Herald: Ukrainians, others celebrate Christmas today

Ukrainians generally follow the Julian calendar, which has Christmas Day set for Jan. 7 each year. As such, local events began on Ukrainian Christmas eve Monday night, highlighted by a church nativity supper and an evening prayer service at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The supper featured 12 meatless dishes, as those celebrating have been fasting from meat and dairy for the past six weeks of Advent, as well as kolach a special bread. According to tradition, dinner begins when the first star appears.
