ODESA - The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine has said that Ukraine was losing around Hr 40 million a year from corruption and other illegal activities during the sales of natural gas produced with the involvement of the public joint-stock company Ukrgazvydobuvannia.

“We estimate thefts in the system of Ukrgazvydobuvannia at Hr 40 billion annually. It is ten times more than all the capital investments by the state,” Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said at a press conference in Odesa on June 17.

He added that a number of lawmakers and other public figures are investigated as part of this and other cases. This fall they may become suspects. “Some of these MPs have been already summoned to the Prosecutor General’s Office,” Lutsenko said.

“Soon we will hear new names,” the prosecutor general said.
