You're reading: Mass Information Institute: Almost 140 reporters hurt during mass rallies in Ukraine

Since Nov. 21, 2013, when Ukraine was rocked by a wave of protest rallies to today, 136 reporters were hurt while ding their jobs, the Institute of Mass Information reported on Monday. 

According to this information, 80 reporters have been hurt over the last two weeks (from January 19 through February 2, 2014).

The majority of the media workers were injured by Berkut riot police (54 cases) while 21 journalists were attacked by the so-called “titushky” (thugs hired by the government), the institute reported.

Besides, 27 reporters were injured by explosions of stun grenades. In addition, there were 17 cases of press workers being injured by bullets fired by the police on Hrushevskoho Street, in two cases Berkut officers aimed directly at cameras, but the journalists managed to dodge the bullets.

Another 19 reporters were hurt in other incidents (for instance, in clashes between the police and the protesters, from rocks flying from both sides and tear-gas poisoning).

Equipment (video cameras, photo cameras, tablet PCs, flash-drives, etc.) belonging to 31 journalists has been damaged or completely destroyed.

According to the Institute of Mass Information, 11 reporters have been detained or arrested by the police.
