Donetsk, Oct. 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Court rulings must not be dictated by a political context or be anti-Russian in nature, said Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, commenting on the case against Ukrainian ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

"I would like the justice, which is currently being administered by Ukrainian courts, to be fully based on the Ukrainian laws. So that verdicts issued by a court have no political or anti-Russian dimension," Medvedev told a press conference held jointly with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Donetsk on Tuesday.

It is very important for me as the Russian president, he said. "I would like "international obligations both in public law and in international private law not to be questioned as a result of any particular court act," Medvedev said.

"I mean contracts between companies," Medvedev said. "I am talking about two companies, a Russian and a Ukrainian one," he said.

As regards the Tymoshenko case, the Russian president said, "I was taught at university to try not to comment on court rulings, whether Russian or foreign, until they take effect," he said.

Moreover, I "recognize Ukraine’s national sovereignty with regard to all the decisions made by the Ukrainian authorities, including judicial ones, meaning the independence of the court," he said.

"To sum up, such is my attitude toward the well-known trial, along with understanding that this is Ukraine’s internal affair," the Russian president said.
