You're reading: MEP Andrikiene: Under current leadership Kyiv not to revisit Association Agreement with EU

Member of the European Parliament and member of the Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly Laima Andrikiene has said that the current leadership of Ukraine does not intend to sign an Association Agreement with the EU, and Kyiv can be returned to the European integration path only through early elections - both presidential and parliamentary ones.

The MEP, who recently visited Ukraine as part of the European
Parliament’s delegation, expressed this opinion in Brussels on Wednesday
during the conference, entitled “Ukraine – Back to the Past or Forward
to the Future with Europe?” organized by the Center for European
Studies.

The current leadership of Ukraine will not sign the association
agreement due to the lack of political will and pressure from Russia,
she said.

Andrikiene expressed the confidence that only early presidential and
parliamentary elections could put Ukraine back on track of the European
integration.

The resignation of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov’s government will not be enough, the European politician said.

At the same time, she criticized the European Union’s position with regard to Ukraine.

She said this was a defeat of the EU in the global geopolitical game.

She also said that Brussels should find tools to counter Russia.
