You're reading: Minister: Ukraine fulfills all European Court’s rulings on material compensation

Ukraine is fulfilling all rulings of the European Court on Human Rights (ECHR) on material compensation, the country's justice minister, Oleksandr Lavrynovych, has said.

In an interview with the Komsomolskaya Pravda v Ukraine newspaper, the minister said that the majority of appeals from Ukraine to the ECHR are related to the non-fulfillment of court rulings.

“There are two reasons here. The first one is that legal awareness of the European court’s activities is rather good in Ukraine. Secondly, our legislation envisages many benefits, social aid payments, and other payments that cannot be covered by state assets,” Lavrynovych said.

He added that some time ago the ECHR suspended for two years the reception of appeals of three categories and expected that Ukraine would bring its laws into line with the real situation.

“But this never happened. That’s why we are facing problems again. Speaking about sums, I cannot name exact figures, as they keep changing all the time, but we are speaking about millions of hryvnias. Ukraine fulfills all of the rulings of the European court on material compensation,” the minister said.

As reported, last week the ECHR obliged the Ukrainian government to pay around EUR 500,000 on five appeals.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has recommended that Ukraine form an agency in charge of the execution of the ECHR’s rulings.
