Updated reports indicate that nine policemen were injured in clashes with opponents to an LGBT Pride parade in Kyiv on June 6.

The local LGBT community organized an Equality March on Obolonska Quay in Kyiv on June 6, during which police clashed with a group of young people opposing the event.

One of the injured policemen is in serious condition with a fragmentation wound to his neck, the Kyiv city police department told Interfax.

“Twenty-five offenders who threw firecrackers [at parade participants] through the police cordon have been detained. Firecrackers, screwdrivers, knives, and other dangerous objects have been seized from those detained,” it said.

Reports on possible casualties among civilians have yet to be verified, and a team of investigators is working at the scene. A criminal case has been opened under Ukrainian Criminal Code Article 296, Part 4 (disorderly conduct), it said.

“A total of over 2,000 policemen were responsible for public order during the mass event, including combined units of Kyiv police, specially assigned regional units, and a special police battalion specializing in maintaining public order,” it said.
