Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Valeria Lutkovska and President of the Red Cross Society of Ukraine Ivan Usychenko have signed a memorandum on cooperation between the two agencies, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reports.

Lutkovska and Usychenko said that the memorandum would contribute to the efficient work of the Office of the Ombudsman and the Red Cross Society.

“We hope that this (the signing of the memorandum) will add to our efforts to protect human rights in Ukraine,” Lutkovska said.

For his part, Usychenko noted that in recent years the number of both man-made and natural disasters and the number of armed conflicts had been increasing, which affects millions of people who require protection, including aid from organizations such as the Red Cross.

“They need protection, humanitarian assistance and social security. I think that the signing of this memorandum will provide an additional incentive for the protection of human rights, and stimulate the provision of assistance to those who need our help,” he said.
