You're reading: Opposition insists on resumption of work of Kyiv district councils

Members of the opposition factions of the Ukrainian parliament have suggested that Kyiv City Council resume the work of the district councils and call district council elections.

Parliamentarian Yuriy Odarchenko (Batkivschyna faction) told Kyiv City Council on Tuesday that calling Kyiv City Council and city mayoral elections is the responsibility of the parliament, which is not making such decisions.

At the same time, he reiterated that calling district council elections is a responsibility of the city council.

“The people [Euromaidan activists] did not go into the Kyiv City Council hall today because they respect public sector workers and understand the people of Kyiv. At the same time, the Kyiv council is currently not legitimate,” Odarchenko said.

At the same time, Andriy Illienko, a member of the Svoboda faction, invited the Kyiv administration to return to the building of the Kyiv city state administration.

“There is no extremism there, come. There is no extremism there, cultural events are taking place there, music is playing,” he said.

At the same time, parliamentarian Natalia Novak (UDAR faction) said the Kyiv council deputies “have usurped power” because their powers have expired and called on the Kyiv council to disband itself.

Volodymyr Makeyenko, the head of Kyiv City State Administration, agreed that the issue of the resumption of the work of the district councils is currently a vital one because it is being raised by Kyiv residents.

At the same time, he said this issue needs to be discussed with society.

“We need to adopt the budget today,” he said.

The building of the Kyiv city administration has been occupied by protesters since December 1, 2013. Kyiv City Council met in the building of the Pecherska district administration to adopt the city budget.
