OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic has condemned the recent attacks on Ukrainian journalists and called on the Ukrainian government to enhance safety of media professionals.

A posting on the Web site of the organization reads that Mijatovic expressed concern about a reported attack on journalist Oleh Bohdanov, who works for the Dorozhny Kontrol (Traffic Control) online newspaper, which reports on alleged irregularities in the work of the traffic police, and an attack on journalists during a rally in Kyiv on July 18.

“As the safety of journalists is essential to preserve the right to freedom of expression, the law enforcement bodies should be committed to protecting their rights and assisting them in the implementation of their professional duties,” said Mijatovic.

“I call on the authorities to do their utmost to ensure the safety of journalists and bring the perpetrators of the attacks to justice. In this regard, I welcome the fact that the working group on freedom of speech and protection of journalists under the president of Ukraine will oversee the investigation into both incidents,” she said.

“My office stands ready to support Ukraine with all means available to prevent violence against and ensure the safety of journalists,” Mijatovic said.
