Ukraine's government has decided to increase charter capital of two state-run banks Oschadbank and Ukreximbank (both based in Kyiv) by Hr 4.956 billion and Hr 9.319 billion, respectively.

Cabinet resolutions No. 31 and No. 33 dated Jan. 27, which were made public on Jan. 28, stipulate that part of the additional issues of the banks’ shares will be swapped for government domestic loan bonds.

After the issues, the state will retain 100 percent of shares of each bank.

Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine Valeriya Gontareva said at a press conference on Thursday that the bank would not buy those bonds. “Oschadbank and Ukreximbank need additional capitalization worth Hr 15 billion this year. Their capital will grow at the expense of long-term state bonds, which the NBU is not going to exchange for money,” she said.

Deputy Finance Minister Artem Shevalev told Interfax-Ukraine that the amount of the additional capitalization had been determined after the NBU conducted stress tests at the banks in 2015.
