Kyiv City Council's pro-presidential Party of Regions faction on Oct. 13 proposed for banning the sale of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes in the capital's kiosks, referred to in the draft ordinance as "small architectural structures."

The first point of the as yet unapproved directive "forbids the sale of alcoholic beverages, including beer, and tobacco products within the boundries of Kyiv."
The measure would also introduce a ban on the sale of alcohol from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. seven days a week, including holidays.

According to the city administration’s press serfvice, there are currently 10,843 permanent and temporary licensed kiosks currently in operation, many of which operate illegally.

Kyiv’s current mayor, Leonid Chernovetsky, promised during during his 2007 re-election campaign to make alcohol and tobacco products less available in downtown areas, and the police in early 2010 began enforcing a ban on beer drinking in public.
