You're reading: Peskov: Russia sees coup attempt in actions of Ukrainian radicals

Russia condemns strongly the actions of radicals in Kyiv and considers them to be an attempt at a state coup, Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

“Moscow condemns strongly violence of radical elements, who in the
breach of all agreements previously reached actually used the
implementation of the conditions on amnestying previously detained
people and returned to violent actions immediately,” Peskov told
reporters.

“Besides, their actions can be treated and are treated in Moscow solely as an attempt at a state coup,” Peskov said.

“Together with the seizure of state organizations in various cities
of Ukraine, the seizure of law enforcement facilities and attempts to
seize arms occurs as well,” Peskov said.

“Actually, these extremists elements, they have acquired weapons,” the spokesman said.

When asked about the possible introduction of EU sanctions against
Ukrainian officials, Peskov said that in the opinion of the Russian
authorities “the responsibility for the things happening in the country
completely and utterly rests on extremist elements, whose actions, in
our point of view, should be treated as an attempt at a state coup.”

As to the possibility of settling the situation in Ukraine, “in the
opinion of President Putin, how and when the settlement is reached in
this situation is the sole prerogative of the legitimate Ukrainian
authorities,” Peskov said.

The Russian leadership believes that extremists are fully responsible
for the current situation in Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov
said.

“In the [Russian] president’s view, all responsibility for what is
going on in Ukraine rests precisely with extremists. Moscow has
supported a dialogue with all civilized political forces in Ukraine,”
Peskov told journalists on Wednesday.

Russia wishes its Ukrainian partners “to ensure the settlement of the
situation that has taken shape as soon as possible,” he said.
