You're reading: Poll: Most Ukrainians support Ukraine’s accession to EU

Most Ukrainian citizens have a positive attitude towards Ukraine’s joining the European Union, the Mirror Weekly. Ukraine publication has reported, referring to the results of a poll conducted by the Razumkov Center.

Some 45% of those polled support Ukraine’s membership of the EU, while 34.2% are against the country’s accession to the EU.

At the same time, a significant number of respondents (20.7%) were undecided.

Most respondents (55.8%) said that practical actions by the Ukrainian authorities did not meet their European integration declarations.

And only 12.3% said that the actions of the authorities correspond to these declarations.

Some 37.4% of respondents believe that they will benefit if Ukraine joins the European Union, and 26.5% think that will lose out.

Some 27% believe they will benefit from Ukraine’s accession to the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, and 23.5% think that they will lose from this.

According to the poll, one in four Ukrainians (25.2%) would travel to a European Union country for permanent residence if it were possible.

Some 10.2% would go to a member country of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

More than half of respondents (52.5%) do not want to leave Ukraine for the countries suggested by the sociologists.

Some 45.9% of respondents assessed the level of their awareness about the European Union as average, 36.4% as low, 8.8% have no information about the EU, and only 4.4% described it as high.

The level of the awareness of the Customs Union is lower (35.3%, 40.6%, 15.0% and 4.4% respectively).

The study was conducted by the sociological service of the Razumkov Center from Nov. 3 to Nov. 8, 2011.

A total of 2,009 respondents aged over 18 from all regions in Ukraine, Kyiv and Crimea were interviewed.
