You're reading: Poll shows over half of Ukrainians back early presidential and parliamentary elections

The number of Ukrainian citizens who support the idea of holding early parliamentary elections in the country grew from 47.6 percent in July to 52.7 percent in August.

These are the results of a public opinion survey conducted by the Social Monitoring Center and the Yaremenko Ukrainian Institute for Social Research jointly with the department for monitoring studies of socioeconomic transformations of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences’ Institute for Economics and Forecasting.

“The demand for holding early elections to the Verkhovna Rada has grown. Whereas 47.6 percent [of respondents] supported such an idea last month, this figure has increased to 52.7 percent today,” Kyiv Press Club Executive Director Mykhailo Peresunko said at a presentation of the survey results in Kyiv on August 30.

More than half of Ukrainian residents also backed the idea of holding early presidential elections, but the percentage of those supporting it slightly declined, he said.

“Last month, 55 percent of the population spoke in favor of reelecting the president ahead of time. A slightly lower figure – 52.7 percent – was recorded during this survey,” Peresunko said.

Thirty-nine percent of those polled were against early presidential elections, and 8 percent were undecided, the survey results show.

The poll was conducted on August 11-16, 2016 and involved 2,016 people. The margin of error was between 1.31 percent and 2.18 percent.
