You're reading: Poor quality of pre-trial investigations might result in ECHR rulings against Ukraine

The Prosecutor General's Office provides poor quality legal proceedings in high-profile cases related to the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych (2010-2014). This gives an opportunity for acquittal of the accused, Rostyslav Kravets, a lawyer and a chairman of Legal State public association, has said.

“Due to poor quality of pre-trial investigations a lot of high-profile cases will end in either acquittal or in negative for Ukraine decisions of the European Court of Human Rights,” Kravets said at a press conference on March 29.

In his words, the prosecution poorly defines the charges, while High Council of Justice covers these practices, eventually, discrediting Ukrainian court system overall.

Other lawyers, who attended the press conference, supported Kravets. Lawyer Ihor Ivanov, who represents victims in the case against former Kyiv City State Administration head Oleksandr Popov, said that the cases against Popov and officers of the Berkut special police force were not joined into a single case. Ivanov also said the prosecution of Popov resembled an “equation with several unknowns.”
