Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has congratulated Donald Tusk on assuming office as president of the European Council, the press service of the Ukrainian president reported on Monday, Dec. 1.

“On behalf of the Ukrainian people I wish you inexhaustible enthusiasm and victories in your future efforts aimed at the further consolidation of the European Union, the strengthening of its international role and the establishment of peace, security and prosperity on the European continent,” reads the letter of congratulations.

Poroshenko expressed hope that defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and supporting the country on the path of European integration and reforms envisaged by the Association Agreement would be among major priorities in Tusk’s activity.

He also expressed hope that the first EU summit under Tusk’s chairmanship on Dec. 18-19, 2014 would be “an effective platform for an objective assessment of the situation in Ukraine and consolidated steps by European leaders in support of our state.”

As reported, Tusk previously served as Polish prime minister. On Aug. 30 this year, at an extraordinary meeting of the EU, he was appointed to be the next president of the European Council, and on Sept. 10, he resigned as head of the Polish government. He took up his new post on Dec. 1, 2014, succeeding Herman Van Rompuy.
