Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Polish President Andrzej Duda view the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project as political, rather than economic, in its nature, and, therefore, insist that it should not be implemented.
“We separately discussed energy security, and I would like to thank Poland for providing the essential conditions for completing the feasibility study for building an interconnector, supporting the continued use of the [existing] gas transport facilities to transport gas to Europe and opposing the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project. This is Ukraine’s and Poland’s firm position. We maintain coordination with our partners from Slovakia […] and a huge number of EU countries,” Poroshenko told journalists following negotiations with Duda in Kyiv on Dec. 15.
Poroshenko described Nord Stream-2 as a purely political project. “We insist that this project has no economic sense and is purely political, and we believe it is unacceptable to put political pressure either on the EU member-states or Ukraine in implementing this project,” he said.
Duda confirmed that Warsaw’s position is unanimous with Ukraine. “Poland is voicing its official protest. We have a common position with Ukraine on this issue,” he said.
