You're reading: Poroshenko proposes discussion on adopting law on right to own firearms

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has appealed to Chairman of the Constitutional Commission, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman with a request to convene a meeting of the commission working group to discuss the possibility of adopting a law on civil arms and ammunition.

“To ensure a thorough and comprehensive consideration of the relevant constitutional proposal, I appealed to Chairman of the Constitutional Commission, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman asking to initiate a meeting of the working group of the Constitutional Commission for human rights, freedoms and duties involving in the work the author of the e-petition, the representatives of various political forces, government agencies, civil society institutions, legal scholars, experts,” Poroshenko said in response to electronic petition No. 22/000040-EP on the right to possess firearms.

Regarding the claim for the immediate adoption of the law of Ukraine on civil weapons and ammunition, Poroshenko said that the adoption of law is within the competence of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

The petition was posted on the president’s website on Aug. 29, 2015 by the chairman of the supervisory council of NGO Ukrainian Gun Owners Association, Heorhiy Uchaikin. The petition has been signed by more than 36,000 citizens.
