Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko, at the request of Patrol Police Chief Oleksandr Fatsevych, has signed the law on amending some legislative acts to improve road safety regulations, which provides new powers to the patrol police to ensure traffic safety.

The chief of the patrol police department of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine sent a letter to the president asking him to sign the bill without delay, the presidential press service reported.

The letter says that “the establishment of the patrol police has been a tangible reform and the increase in the number of appeals of people to the patrol police by 60 percent shows a high level of social trust.”

Fatsevych also stressed the need for the patrol police to receive more powers in to ensure road traffic safety.

According to the law, companies and individuals registered to vehicles responsible for breaking traffic rules will be identified automatically using photo and video speed cameras.

If vehicles are registered outside Ukraine and are not or cannot be registered in Ukraine, the person who imported the vehicle to Ukraine is responsible for breaking the traffic rules.

The document revokes the so-called “fine range” for breaking traffic rules and retains the minimum sum of fines.

A fine can be collected on site by cashless payment devices only.

Fines points have been introduced – 150 points per driver for one year. Points will be deducted if an offense is committed
