The election campaign team of Ukraine's presidential candidate Petro Poroshenko has expressed the hope that leader of the Batkivschyna party Yulia Tymoshenko will withdraw her candidacy from the presidential race.

“Yulia Tymoshenko should withdraw her candidacy for the sake of uniting the Ukrainian people. Certainly, if she at all agrees to consider such a step, there will be certain talks between her and Petro Poroshenko,” head of Poroshenko’s election headquarters Vitaliy Kovalchuk said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on April 9.

“Yulia Tymoshenko should demonstrate her responsibility before the Ukrainian people, and in fact give Petro Poroshenko the opportunity to win in the first round, as he is a candidate who has the best chance to win the election in the first round,” he added.

If these elections are conducted in a single round, it would crush any doubts about the legitimacy of the Ukrainian authorities, and it would help ensure security in Ukraine and the transition to specific reforms, said head of the international part of Poroshenko’s election team Valeriy Chaly.

The early Ukrainian presidential election is due on May 25.

In all, 23 presidential candidates have been registered by the Central Election Commission.
