You're reading: Prison service: Tymoshenko’s transfer to Kharkiv penitentiary lawful

The State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine has said that the transfer of Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko from Kyiv detention center to a penal colony in Kharkiv was conducted is in line with the current legislation within the statutory period.

A verdict of Pechersky District Court of Kyiv, which found Tymoshenko guilty of abuse of power and sentenced her to seven years in prison, took effect on December 23, 2011, after it was upheld by Kyiv Court of Appeals, the press service of the agency said.

In this regard, Pechersky District Court in Kyiv issued an order about the execution of the sentence, which was sent to Kyiv detention center.

According to Article 87 of the Penal Code of Ukraine, persons sentenced to imprisonment are sent to serve their sentence no later than within ten days after the entry of the sentence into force, the press service said.

Meanwhile, an investigator in the criminal case, in the frames of which custody was chosen as a preventive measure for Tymoshenko, told the administration of Kyiv detention center that they didn’t insist on keeping the convict in the remand prison.

"Thus, Tymoshenko’s transfer from Kyiv detention center to the penal colony on December 30, 2011 was made in compliance with the current legislation within the statutory period," the press service said.
