Kyiv Prosecutor's Office has said that the charge brought against the LB.ua online newspaper due to the violation of the secrecy of correspondence by Regions Party MP Volodymyr Landik is not private.

“It’s not a case of a private charge, so the prosecutor’s office of the Pechersk district took the decision in accordance with the law,” the media liaisons department of the city prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Thursday.

The press service noted that prosecuting agencies are obliged to respond to statements of crime and, if the circumstances set out in these statements are confirmed, take respective procedural decisions.

“We emphasize that the provisions of Article 63 of the Constitution of Ukraine were explained to Landik and he was warned of criminal liability for providing deliberately false information about a crime,” the prosecutor’s office said.

“The report published (in LB.ua) undermined my credibility and business reputation as a state figure,” the prosecutor’s office quoted Landik as saying.
