"In order to fulfill a presidential order, Ukraine’s prosecutor general has signed a respective task, which was sent to prosecutors in all regions and Crimea and which contains the demands of the prosecutor general to organize immediate checks on all institutions of the penitentiary system, namely the observance of constitutional rights, living conditions, as well as the conditions for ensuring the health of prisoners, i.e. persons who are serving their sentences in these institutions, as well as checks on detention centers where people are imprisoned preliminarily and await court rulings," the spokeswoman for the prosecutor general, Marharyta Velkova, said at a briefing in Kyiv on April 10.

She said that according to the instruction of the prosecutor general, he should be informed about the checks conducted in the regions and that the necessary measures should be taken to eliminate and prevent violations.

On Monday, April 9, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych ordered Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka to conduct checks in the Lukyanivsky pre-trial detention center.

As reported, journalist Kostiantyn Usov made a video feature about the violations of constitutional rights of citizens who are held in Lukyanivsky detention center, which was shown on the TVi channel.
