An Independent Public Council will be created at the Inter TV channel to monitor the maintenance of journalistic standards on the channel.

International Renaissance Foundation and Inter Media Group Limited signed a memorandum on the creation of the Public Council at the Inter TV Channel during a press conference hosted by Interfax-Ukraine.

“Today we establish this initiative, signing a memorandum on cooperation. Our functions will be rather definite. We’ll monitor, recommend certain new formats, and issue public reports on how information is covered on the TV channel,” Executive Director of the Mass Information Institute Viktoria Siumar said.

According to the memorandum, the experts of the council are to conduct an independent monitoring of the international standards of journalism, as well as cooperate with the employees of the channel, and make proposals to create TV programs to inform the public about important public and political events.

Every quarter the experts will present a report on the results of the monitoring, conduct trainings on the maintenance of journalistic standards.

Inter’s Public Council consists of Viktoria Siumar, Board Head of the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting Ihor Burakovsky, Scientific Director of the Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Oleksandr Sushko, Deputy Director General of Razumkov Center Valeriy Chaly, academic of the National Academy of Sciences Ivan Dziuba, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics Anders Aslund, Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations Andrew Wilson, and Chairman of the Stefan Batory Foundation (Warsaw) Oleksandr Smoliar.
