The Ukroboronprom state concern has started testing the introduction of NATO technical standards at its enterprises for designing, production, modernization and repair of weapons and military equipment, Ukroboronprom Head Roman Romanov has said.

“I have signed an order to introduce the testing NATO standards functioning system, first, those concerning quality,” he said at the international seminar devoted to the introduction of NATO standards in the defense and industrial complex of Ukraine held in Kyiv on Thursday.

Romanov expressed confidence that the introduction of the testing NATO standards functioning system for designing, production, modernization and repair of weapons and military equipment would help to assess the technical and technological readiness of Ukrainian defense enterprises for the introduction of NATO standards, determine the terms and financial and material resources required for the introduction of the standards, draw up and amend legislation, draft a real plan on the introduction of NATO standards pegging it to concrete enterprises and train staff using experience of Alliance countries.

“The main thing is the response to the question: in what point we are during the switch to NATO standards would be received,” Romanov said.

He said that at present the Ukrainian defense and industrial complex applies NATO technical standards for production and modernization some weapons, including anti-tank weapons and aircraft. He also said that the innovative step was the decision to introduce NATO technical standards for all life cycles of weapons and military equipment.

Today, over 70% of Ukroboronprom’s enterprises have international quality standard ISO 9001:2000 certificates. This is evidence of a large potential of international cooperation in the defense area, Romanov said.
