You're reading: Roof caves in at Kyiv’s new shopping mall (update)

The roof of the Kyiv's new Sky Mall collapsed on Feb. 17, injuring one, according to a Emergency Ministry spokesman, who said 500 square meters of mall space was damaged.

One of Kyiv’s newest shopping malls, Sky Mall occupies over 63,000 square meters.

A employee of the MOYO store at the mall told the Kyiv Post that all visitors and shop keepers at the mall have been evacuated.

"Two women were injured. One was taken to hospital with numerous lacerations, while the second refused hospitalization," the press service reported.

Meanwhile, the press service of Kyiv prosecutor’s office said a criminal investigation into the incident has been launched.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Dniprovsky district of Kyiv opened a criminal case into the violation of safety regulations (Part 1 of Article 275 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) by officials of Prism Beta Ltd. during the construction of the Sky Mall center, the press service said.

According to prosecutor’s office, a plasterboard structure collapsed in the shopping mall. The Sky Mall opened for business in late August 2010.
