You're reading: Saakashvili: Ukraine should abide by domestic and international law in opposition trials

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has said that Ukraine should abide by the provisions of domestic and international law in the trials of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko.

"Of course, I talked to Yulia Tymoshenko and other Ukrainian politicians. But Ukraine needs to resolve many issues on its own, based on the rule of law (both domestic and international) and taking into account international realities," he said in an interview with the Segodnya newspaper published on Thursday.

"We, for example, were very tough in our country and did not beat about the bush. After the Rose Revolution, we prosecuted on charges of corruption not only political figures from the previous government (several ministers, head of the audit office and members of the president’s family), but also many members of our team, including ministers, deputy ministers and mayors, as well as four MPs from the ruling party – my former colleagues, whom I relied on and whom I respected! Over forty judges were also called to account. It’s a large figure for such a little country as Georgia," Saakashvili said.
