You're reading: Security Service: Alleged gang war likeliest explanation of Ukraine blasts

The four bombings in the Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk on April 27 that left at least 30 people injured were most likely part of an alleged gang war, according to the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU).

"A war is in progress in the city between local business groups, which still have links to the criminal element. Two weeks ago, Hennadiy Akselrod, an influential businessman, got killed. He had a series of accusations of corporate raiding on his record. There are all reasons to assume that those terrorist acts had nothing to do with politics," Ukrainian website ZN.UA quoted an SBU source as saying.

"Law enforcement and special services are making very restrained official comments on the investigation [of the blasts]. Nevertheless, SBU deputy chief Volodymyr Rokytsky has expressed confidence that there were no politics behind what happened," ZN.UA said.

"I doubt that there’s any political force that may take part in such actions because there is God in the world, Who doesn’t forgive such things," the site quoted him as saying.

The Health Ministry said 26 of those injured in the explosions had been hospitalized. On May 2, 14 of them remained in hospital. Their lives were said to be out of danger.
