You're reading: Shvets hopes for positive ruling on Tymoshenko case in European Court

BYT-Batkivschyna faction deputy Viktor Shvets has said he expects a positive ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in a lawsuit lodged by Batkivschyna Party leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

"The European court will consider this case in April, and I have no doubt that this court, as a guarantor of human rights and freedoms, will confirm the illegality of actions taken during the pretrial investigation and prosecution of Tymoshenko," he said at a press conference in Lviv.

Shvets said that it was important that the court confirm that "Tymoshenko’s right to a defense was violated, and the trial was unfair and biased."

"We hope that the court will take our arguments into account, and such a ruling will be issued," he said.

As reported, Kyiv’s Court of Appeals upheld the Pechersky District Court verdict sentencing Tymoshenko to seven years in prison for abuse of office when signing gas contracts with Russia in 2009. The court ruling on the legality of Tymoshenko’s second arrest is not subject to cassation appeal.

The defense team of the former prime minister has decided to appeal against the ruling of the Court of Appeals in the ECHR.
