You're reading: Six Ukrainian universities make it to world’s best colleges list

Six Ukrainian colleges made it to the list of the 900 best universities in the world according to the latest Quacquarelli Symods World University Rankings 2016-2017 published on Sept. 6.

Out of the six Ukrainian colleges on the list, V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University ranked the highest, taking up the 382nd position. The university improved its position by 109 points compared to the last year ranking.

It also ranked 56th among top universities in Emerging Europe and Central Asia according to EECA 2016 rating.

Founded in 1804, Kharkiv National University is a public university which has 20 schools, three research institutes, and three museums. It provides education to 14,000 undergraduate and 500 postgraduate students and employs some 1,100 professors.

In August, the Kharkiv University’s young researchers won nearly Hr 1.5 million from the Ministry of Education for their two projects.

Other Ukrainian universities that made it to the ranking were not given individual rating positions and ranked in groups.

Kyiv-based Taras Shevchenko National University ranked 431-440, Kyiv Polytechnic Institute ranked 551-600. Donetsk National University, Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, and Sumy State University all ranked in 700s.

QS World University Rankings

Ukraine’s internal rating of Top 200 universities assessed these colleges differently. According to it, the Kharkiv University is only third best in the country, while Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute occupy first, second, and fourth positions respectively.

The 13th edition of QS World University Rankings ranked 916 universities in 80 countries with over 3,800 assessed. It is based on six performance indicators such as academic reputation, employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratio, research citations per faculty, international staff and students ratio.

Similar to previous years, US and UK universities retain their positions at the top. The first place is held by Massachusetts Institute of Technology for the fifth consecutive year. The only European university which made it to the top 10 is Switzerland’s ETH Zurich.
