The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine may take charge of the investigation into the disappearance of Vasyl Klymentyev, chief editor of the Kharkiv-based Novyi Stil weekly, if it is determined that police officers were involved into the crime.

"We still do not know who committed this crime … If this crime is solved and it is established that law enforcement officers were involved in it, we will take charge of this case," Prosecutor General Oleksandr Medvedko said at a briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.

Medvedko also said that the case is qualified as a premeditated murder, thus it falls under the jurisdiction of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine.

Klymentyev, chief editor for the Kharkiv-based weekly Novyi Stil, disappeared on August 11 and is still missing.

His colleagues have expressed concern that Klymentyev’s disappearance is connected to his professional work.
