You're reading: Surkis: Kyiv or Donetsk could bid to host Euro 2020

Former President of the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) and a member of the UEFA Executive Committee, Hryhoriy Surkis, has said that Kyiv and Donetsk could bid to host the matches of the European Football Championship in 2020, which, under a recent UEFA decision, will be held in various cities across Europe.

“In principle, we cannot say that several cities in one country could become contenders as venues of the tournament. But I’m sure that the FFU will try to hold talks with the government so that Ukraine also submits a bid. There are only two candidate cities in our country – Donetsk, with its 50,000-seat Donbass Arena, and Kyiv, with its 70,000-seat Olympiysky Stadium,” he said in an interview with Sport-Express in Ukraine.

In his opinion, the stadiums that host the tournament should seat at least 50,000 people.

“It’s also clear that UEFA may refuse the acceptance of applications if they concern stadiums under construction,” he added.
