The sale of electronic tickets for passenger trains using QR codes in Ukraine will start from December 25 for the Intercity+ Ukrainian Express trains, Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure Borys Kolesnikov has said, when presenting electronic tickets in Kyiv.

“From December 25 all smartphone owners will be able to purchase tickets via the Internet without printing: just save the QR code on your phone and go to the train, without having to go to booking-offices,” he said.

According to Kolesnikov, to purchase such a ticket on the Web site of Ukrzaliznytsia, passengers should go to the online purchase section and choose a train route, date and place of departure, and then pay using a credit card.

After receiving a confirmation email, passengers are to take the picture of the QR code on their phone. The train conductor, using a mobile access control terminal will read the information encoded.

“Those, who do not have a smartphone, can simply print the form with the QR code and come to the train. The conductor will read all the data,” said Kolesnikov.

According to him, this technology will be launched from December 25, 2012 on Intercity+ trains, from June 1, 2013 on all high-speed trains, and by the end of the summer of 2013 on all trains.
