Ukraine's acting deputy presidential chief-of-staff, Andriy Senchenko, is convinced there is a need today to declare martial law in the country's eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

“It is obvious that there is a need today to immediately declare martial law in these 2 regions,” Senchenko said during the Shuster Live television program on June 2 evening.

The main task of the ongoing military operation is to “liberate” the eastern parts of Ukraine, he said.

“But it does not mean that they will now start to fire tanks at Luhansk,” he said.

The operation in southeastern Ukraine will be conducted in a “qualified, but tough manner”, Senchenko said, pledging, at the same time, to spare no effort to prevent any harm to the local civilian population.
