Two former police officers, who were involved in subversive activities, have been arrested in Kyiv, the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) said on May 22.

“The Ukrainian Security Service arrested two saboteurs – members of a terrorist group – in Kyiv on May 22 as part of anti-terrorist measures,” the SBU said in a statement.

In January 2014, these individuals arrived from Crimea to Kyiv and “joined activists in the Kyiv city state administration under the guise of Euromaidan supporters,” the spokesperson said.

“Positioning themselves as Euromaidan activists, O. and S. were plotting a number of actions of a subversive nature against our state,” the statement said.

The danger to the public also consisted in that these individuals were former police officers who had special expertise about policing methods, the SBU said.

The search of the suspects’ addresses and non-residential premises they had used led to the seizure of weapons, ammunition and explosives, the spokesperson said.

“The perpetrators resisted efforts to arrest them by trying to escape. Currently, relevant investigative measures continue,” the SBU said.
